Police Should Not Use The Word NEGRO : High Court

Hearing in a case under the NDPS Act, the High Court has directed not to use the word negro for people of African descent. Justice Rajeev Narayan Raina said in the judgment that whatever police officers or personnel of Punjab Police use racial words like negro, the DGP should take strict action against them. At present, there is a campaign going on all over the world, demanding strict punishment for those who discriminate on the basis of color.Advocate Sahil Puri said on behalf of the petitioner that the court has said in its orders that whenever police arrest any African, Nigerian person or citizen of any other country in any case, they should be called with respect. In the NDPS case, a petition was filed in the High Court, stating that in an FIR by the police personnel, the African accused was also written in Negro and Challan in Negro.
Hearing the petition, the High Court said that the word negro is considered derogatory all over the world and it is also wrong to use the word. The High Court ordered the police in strict terms that such a word should not be used on any document.
