Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, has voted for a General Election to be held on Thursday 12th December

For all most a year now Labour, SNP, L/Ds, Welsh Nationalist, Conservative, Independent and Green Members of Parliament have working together to stop the Tories from crashing the United Kingdom out of the EU with no deal or Theresa May’s very bad deal.

The new Tory Prime Minister re-negotiated the ‘Withdrawal Agreement’ with Europe and brought back a deal that is worse than the original. He put the deal before Parliament and then refused to let the House of Commons scrutinise it or pass it into law.

The Prime Minister has said that the UK would leave the EU ‘do or die’, ‘no ifs or buts’ and he ‘rather be dead in a ditch’ than stay in the EU beyond 31^st October. Despite all this bluster and empty rhetoric, the Prime Minister has now taken the no-deal exit from the EU off table and extended our membership of the EU until 31^st January 2020.

Parliament has now decided that the best way forward is to hold an early General Election.

“The Tories have divided our country, decimated public services, caused rising homelessness and forced record numbers to use food banks. Many families are struggling to get by and are borrowing to cover basic expenses. A record of failure.

“We now have the opportunity to elect a Labour Government with the most ambitious and radical agenda for change our country has ever seen.

“After years of Tory austerity, it is time to rebuild our communities, invest in our public services, boost local business and bring our country back together again.

“It has been a huge privilege to represent Warrington South over the past two years, but much remains to be done. I am the person with the experience, the enthusiasm and the optimism needed to get on with the job.’’

ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਉਸਤਾਦ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲਗੋ ਗੁਰਦਿਆਲ ਰੌਸ਼ਨ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੀ ਸਫ਼ਲਤਾ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਧਾਈ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਭੇਜਿਆ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਾਬ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੈਂਸ ਨੇ ਸਰੋਤਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ। 

 ਉਪਰੰਤ ਪ੍ਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਸ਼ਿੰਗਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਢਿੱਲੋਂ ਨੇ ‘ਗ਼ਜਲਾਂਜਲੀ’ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ-ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹਿ ‘ਤੇ  “ਗੁਰਸ਼ਰਨ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਜੀਬ ਦੀ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਜੁਗਤ - ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲਾਂਜਲੀ ਦੇ ਅਧਾਰ ‘ਤੇ ਇਕ ਅਧਿਐਨ” ਨਾਮੀ  ਆਪਣਾ ਪਰਚਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਸਰਵਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਧੀਰ, ਡਾ. ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਕੈਂਬੋ, ਪਰਕਾਸ਼ ਸੋਹਲ, ਕੇ.ਸੀ. ਮੋਹਣ ਆਦਿ ਨੇ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਆ। ਇਸ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਦਰਬਾਰ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਬਰਤਾਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮਾਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਦੀ ਵੱਖ ਵੱਖ ਤਰੀਕਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਸ਼ਖਸ਼ੀਅਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਵੀ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਜਿੱਥੇ ਚਿੱਤਰਕਾਰ ਸਰਦਾਰ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਰੰਗੀਨ ਚਿੱਤਰਾਂ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮਾਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਰ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉੱਥੇ ਗ਼ਜਲਗੋ ਅਜ਼ੀਮ ਸ਼ੇਖਰ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਦੇਸ਼ ਰਹਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਚੰਗੀ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਂ ਬੋਲੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜਿਆ। ਪਿੱਛਲੇ ਦੋ ਦਹਾਕਿਆਂ ਤੋਂ ਟੀ ਵੀ ਵਕਤਾ ਸਰਦਾਰਨੀ ਰੂਪ ਦਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੋਰ ਨਾਹਿਲ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਸੰਚਾਰ ਮਾਧਿਅਮ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਤੇ ਵਿਰਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ  ਦੀਆਂ ਵੱਡਮੁਲੀਆਂ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ਾਂ, ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਕਰਕੇ ਗ਼ਜ਼ਲ ਮੰਚ ਵਲੋਂ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸ਼ਖਸੀਅਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸੇਸ਼ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਪੱਤਰ ਰਾਹੀਂ  ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਸ ਮੋਕੇ ‘ਤੇ ਚਿਤਰਕਾਰ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਰੂਪ ਦਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਨਾਹਿਲ ਜੀ ਦਾ ਉਹਨਾਂ (ਸਰੂਪ ਸਿੰਘ) ਵਲੋਂ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਖੂਬਸੂਰਤ ਚਿੱਤਰ ਵੀ ਰੂਪ ਦੇਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਜੀ ਨੂੰ ਭੇਟ ਕੀਤਾ। ਸਰਦਾਰ ਮੁਸ਼ਤਾਕ ਸਿੰਘ 'ਮੁਸ਼ਤਾਕ' ਨੂੰ ਅਚਾਨਕ ਸਿਹਤ ਦੀ ਖਰਾਬੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਜਲਦੀ ਘਰ ਵਾਪਸ ਜਾਣਾ ਪੈ ਗਿਆ। ਸਾਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਫਸੋਸ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਲਾਮ ਸੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕੇ।

Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, attacked the Government’s record on food poverty, wage stagnation and NHS underfunding in his contribution to the Queen’s Speech debates on Thursday 25^th October.

Faisal noted the recent expansion of a food bank in Warrington as a symptom of the Government’s incompetency and disregard for those struggling to get by. Warrington Foodbank recently opened its new unit to cope with the alarming levels of demand.  According to analysis from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, annual wages were £760 lower last year than they were a decade ago. Families are increasingly borrow to get by, with an estimated 8.3 million people unable to keep up with debts or bills.

Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, said:

“Hunger is becoming normal in modern Britain – a scathing indictment of our broken economy. In Warrington our local foodbank has just had to open a new distribution centre to cope with the rising levels of demand. Warrington’s foodbank was set up in 2012, just two years after the Tories came to power with the help of the Liberal Democrats.

“Now this food bank distributes around 46,000 meals annually, and 35% of those meals go to children. What an utter disgrace that it will now be forced to expand to meet rising demand in our town.

“People in our country today work the longest average full-time hours in Europe apart from Greece and Austria. But has this translated into a rise in wealth and living standards for the average worker? Absolutely not.  The average employee today works more, earns less, and even produces less than a decade ago.

“Families are forced to borrow to cover basic expenses; an estimated 8.3 million people cannot keep up with debts or bills. The housing market is in crisis, with young people set to be poorer than their parents.

“These are the symptoms of a deeply broken economy that requires radical overhaul. Despite the Tories’ bogus claims about getting the deficit down, Government debt is now 10% higher as a proportion of GDP than it was in 2010.

“They have presided over a lost decade of economic stagnation – with ordinary workers paying the price.

“In Government, Labour would rewrite the rules of the UK economy, fundamentally redistributing wealth and power and putting it in the hands of ordinary working people. We wouldn’t see foodbanks expanding under Labour. We would see them shut down for good.”

London,October 2019-(Amanjit Singh Khaira)-  Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, has written to Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock to make the case for a new, all-purpose hospital in his constituency. Faisal’s letter follows his criticism of the Government’s misleading hospital funding pledges after it emerged that funding was only to be made available to reconfigure six existing hospitals. The Prime Minister had previously claimed he intended to build “40 new hospitals”.   

The six hospital projects to be completed are at Whipps Cross Hospital in north-east London; Epsom and St Helier Trust in Surrey; West Hertfordshire Trust; Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust in Harlow, Essex; University Hospitals of Leicester Trust; and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. None of these proposed investments will benefit NHS patients in North-West England.

Parts of the Warrington Hospital site are more than 100 years old and essential maintenance of the building costs around £2 million a year, a huge challenge to run an efficient and effective hospital facility.

As Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Healthcare Infrastructure, Faisal has led demands for a new, state of the art hospital to be built in the town. Warrington’s growing population requires a local hospital facility that can cater to the full spectrum of patients’ needs, including comprehensive A&E services.

Just attempting to keep on top of essential maintenance of the building costs around £2 million a year – a huge challenge to run an efficient and effective hospital facility. I am sure that the NHS staff working hard to service these facilities find the Prime Minister’s misleading claims as cynical and unhelpful as I do.

“I have asked the Secretary of State if he has any plans to invest in a new facility in our town. A Government with a long-term plan for the NHS would invest in a new, all-purpose hospital facility in Warrington. Warrington and Halton Hospitals Foundation Trust would need to spend £20M over the next ten years just to keep abreast of necessary and urgent maintenance.

“I will continue to fight for a new, fit for purpose hospital for our town and await the Minister’s response.”

Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, has asked the Secretary of State for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy to launch an investigation into shocking reports of workplace rights being violated at Amazon. Faisal’s intervention was based on reports that emerged on 20^th October, which claimed that exhausted staff at an Amazon warehouse in Tilbury, Essex regularly fall asleep in the toilets, have been punished for trying to form a union and get reported for taking breaks longer than ten minutes. Workers even reported a pregnant woman who fell ill being refused an ambulance by warehouse management.

According to figures from Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations, almost 50 serious injuries – including broken bones – have been suffered by Amazon workers at its Tilbury warehouse in the past two years.

In January 2019, Amazon become the world's most valuable listed company at $797bn (£634bn). With an estimated fortune of $131bn (£99bn), Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the wealthiest man in modern history.

“This week shocking reports emerged about dire workplace conditions at Amazon. Reports of workers falling asleep in staff toilets due to exhaustion and some employees being refused professional medical treatment are appalling. It is worth remembering that Amazon is the most valuable public company in the world and its owner, Jeff Bezos, the richest man on the planet.

“These exploited workers desperately need a union. Yet workers at Amazon have had their shift patterns interrupted just prevent them from talking to union officials on the way in to work. I asked the Minister to launch an investigation into workplace conditions at Amazon but as is so often the case, my question was dodged, and no commitments were given.

“With in-work poverty on the rise and zero-hours contracts becoming commonplace, the role of trade unions has never been more critical. Your rights at work are not safe under this Government. A Labour government will empower workers and their trade unions – because we are stronger when we stand together.”

Asks the Government to hold a debate for constituents trapped in unfair leasehold contracts

London, October 2019-(Amanjit Singh Khaira)-

Faisal Rashid, MP for Warrington South, accused David Wilson Homes of mis-selling leasehold properties to his constituents in Parliamentary Business Questions yesterday (17^th October). Faisal raised the issues faced by residents of Steinbeck Grange, Chapelford and called for a debate to discuss compensation for existing leaseholders trapped in unfair and exploitative contracts. The Leader of the House, Jacob Rees-Mogg MP, recommended Faisal apply for a Backbench Business Debate on the issue, which he has since agreed to do.

Leasehold ownership, most commonly found in flats, means purchasing a home for the duration of a long lease rather than owning it outright. Homeowners who purchase a leasehold property are often faced with extortionate charges in the form of ‘ground rents’ or service charges and are locked into restrictive contracts which were not properly explained.

Figures have revealed that an estimated 47.84% of homes in Warrington South were sold as leasehold last year. Leasehold reforms promised by the Conservative Government have still not been implemented, two years after they were first proposed.

Labour have proposed a ban on the sale of new leasehold houses and flats. Under Labour, leaseholders will be able to buy the full freehold ownership of their home for 1% of the property value, with ground rents in existing leaseholds capped at 0.1% of the property value, up to a maximum of £250 a year.

“A number of my constituents in Steinbeck Grange, Chapelford Development in Warrington south have been mis-sold leasehold properties by David Wilson Homes and face rip-off ground rents, punitive management fees and unfair contract conditions.

“Government action on this issue is unacceptable. Proposals have been brought forward to avoid future leasehold rip-offs, but nothing is being done for those already trapped in these onerous and exploitative contracts.

I will continue to fight on behalf of my constituents in Steinbeck Grange, who I believe deserve compensation. Time is up on excessive ground rents and service charges which rip off hard working people.”
